War of the Telcos

A trip to the doctor's, one will find every patient waiting for their turn looking into their phones checking for whatsapp, reading news, watching TikTok perhaps and kids watching Youtube or voot.
Go to Mall, you will find kids and adults doing the same.
At a birthday party, you can find elderly out in a corner with a phone near his ear listening to video perhaps.
The same goes for a person while travelling via bus or train.
Why? You can even find someone reading and messaging back while waiting for the signal to go green. Amazing!!!
Now before you think this page about world going bad because of mobile phones, I can assure you its not.!!

Its About Pricing

Before Jio entered into Telcos, there was more of  Voice calls and sms. Less of data. With the introduction of 4G and along with it freebies of voice and data , the scenario changed. You can watch anything, anywhere at dirt cheap prices. Prices that are the lowest in the world.
Not for long my friend!! This is going to change.

There are many Jio users who like me wanted to try Jio when it came out. Some for its freebies, some for better coverage in a particular area(Mind you! Jio coverage isn't exactly mind blowing) or may be sheer curiosity. I m sure they do have another Airtel or Vodaphone Idea SIM with them.

While Telcos have been burning cash all this while, we as users never had to think about price. But what will happen when Telcos say Enough is Enough! Start paying! What happens when they charge for data and not voice. Data through which we do audio calls, video calls, watch videos, play games, send message, view and post messages in variety of social media. The truth is majority of us today use smart phones for data and not for voice which until now we have been having a free ride.

Vodaphone and Airtel after recent AGR judgment had decided to increase its tariff and so does Jio. This increase will be on data and it will increase further in the recent years. And soon it will be big enough to become a big hole in our pockets.

After this I wonder how many will continue with Jio or Vodafone Idea or Airtel!! Most people who have more than one SIM will have to decide which to discontinue and which freebie they will do away if they do.

This period will probably test telcos on who does it best in retention and customer service. Whether Jio or Airtel or Vodafone Idea gets better at their game is something to watch for!

SC Judgment on Essar Steel

What it is about? Imagine a company that took debt from banks who are secure creditors and from operational creditor. This company at a later date is not able to repay this loan. The company will then proceed to NCLT proceedings. Then a problem arises. To whom should the company pay with the money from its assets. Its Operational creditors or financial creditors. The judgment today addresses this issue. Operational creditors are those that gave their services to this company who could not pay back as no cash is available. Why is it important? If the Supreme Court favor the Operational creditor, then it have an impact on the entire banking system. The Banks which is already stressed will think twice before lending and in this financial environment where demand is low, only liquidity helps is being throttled at its source.  Not just that, Banks will increase loan interest rate if the judgement is in favor of Operational Creditor. This is have major implications in a credit b...

Hindustan Unilever - Triangle pattern

The recent pandemic and the lockdown  that followed has pushed many people to near bankruptcy. With this in mind, the stock that comes to the mind is the essential services and commodities. Consumers will buy those things that are low ticket consumption and used for everyday use. One such evergreen stock is Hindustan Unilever. After making a recent high during peak lockdown, it has come down to 1954-2100 levels for a consolidation. During this time the health drinks (Boost, Horlicks )have been merged with HUL from GSK. You can read all about in it here =>  gsk-horlicks-to-sell-hul-shares-worth-rs-26000-crore The price during this share sale was down to 1900 and then went into consolidation which formed a triangle as shown in the figure. The breakout happens from 1980 levels. The Upward movement continued and this is confirmed by its 5% rise after that.  Which leads me to think there buying at 2040-2060 is a good place to buy with a view that 1960 leve...
